Morning pages

2026/03/25 · 1 min read · ●

Three pages, longhand, every morning. Stream of consciousness, no stopping. No editing. No judgment.

No one will read it, including you.

Why it works#

Not writing practice — mental clearing. Get the low-priority noise out of working memory (last night's dream, office politics anxiety, what someone said) so it doesn't crowd out the day's real work.

What it isn't#

Not a journal (you re-read those). Not a blog (those have audience). Not a Twitter thread (Twitter wants likes).

Morning pages have no audience. That's the most important property.

Cadence#

I do it three or four times a week, not daily. When I notice a "loud brain" day, I do morning pages the next morning.

The discipline of finishing is about writing for publication. This is the inverse: writing that's never published. Both matter.
