Reading list — 2026 spring season
The current reading season. Updated as it progresses.
Anchor: Christopher Alexander, The Nature of Order, vol. 1 (third re-read).
Supporting:
- John Berger, "Ways of Seeing" (re-read)
- Jane Jacobs, The Death and Life of Great American Cities (selections)
- Stewart Brand, How Buildings Learn (re-read)
- Two essays from Yi-Fu Tuan's Space and Place
Loose: miscellaneous shorter pieces I keep coming back to — a few of Hazlitt's essays, a long Gwern piece on architectural writing.
The anchor + supporting set forms a small constellation around what makes a thing feel alive. The spring season has been about that question. Next season is open, but probably about something narrower.
If you want recommendations from this list: pick Berger first. Short, transformative, and you can read it on one airplane ride.
