Negative space

Two designers say the same thing but only one of them is heard. The difference is rarely the words. It's how much the speaker is willing to leave unsaid.

This applies to writing too, of course. The published essays on this site are roughly half the length of their first drafts. Almost all the cuts came from removing the explanations the reader didn't need. They added value by leaving things out.

The hard part is calibration. Cut too little and you bore the reader. Cut too much and they don't follow. The right amount depends on which reader. (See Everything you make is a letter.)

The discipline isn't writing less. It's trusting the reader more. Most beginners over-explain because they don't trust the reader to follow. Most great writers under-explain because they do.
